The Lady Greyhounds kicked off the pre-season basketball campaign in earnest this week, gaining a split in a pair of games.
Healdsburg (1-1) opened the season at Willits on Saturday, falling 56-46. The ladies had to overcome some first-game jitters, coughing up 24 turnovers and shooting just 17-percent from the floor in the first three quarters before finishing with a flourish.
Healdsburg turned up the heat defensively in the fourth quarter, forcing frequent turnovers leading to easy lay-ups. The Hounds shot 55-percent in the period to make it respectable, exploding for 21 points en route to a 10-point loss.
“It was a good opening game, and the girls learned a lot,” said head coach Jackie Sellards. “The first three quarters were sloppy and very rushed, but in the fourth quarter they figured it out and finally got it going.”

The Lady Greyhound basketball squad is ready to seize its opportunity on the latter, in what promises to be a mad scramble for Sonoma County League supremacy this winter.
With a core of seven varsity returnees and a talented group of first-year players, veteran head coach Jackie Sellards is hopeful that a winning season is in the works.
“Our team goal is to play our best in league and secure a place in the NCS,” said Sellards, assisted by Keith Koch and Jimmy Gonnella. “We should do okay this season. If the girls bring focus, intensity, and hard work to every practice and game, who knows what their limits will be?”
Key returning players include third-year junior guard Cassidy Jourdan and sophomore forward Helen Ann Haun.
